Building a Culture of Belonging: The Impact of Our Biweekly New Hire Orientations

At Community Partners in Action, we believe that building a welcoming, inclusive, and empowering workplace begins from day one. Thanks to the dedication of HR Director Marie MacLean and HR Generalist Sonja Booze, our biweekly orientations are not just about policies and procedures; they’re a powerful introduction to our mission, values, and BEDI (Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) culture. These sessions allow new staff to witness firsthand that CPA truly “walks the walk,” setting a standard that goes beyond mere words.

Our orientations create space for honest dialogue and authentic connection. We regularly hear feedback from new hires who appreciate CPA’s willingness to have real conversations about the challenging work we do.

In particular, we highlight the resilience of the people we serve—many of whom have been impacted by a historically racist criminal justice system. This transparency and commitment to awareness deepen staff members’ understanding of both the CPA mission and broader societal context within which we work.

Sarah Drayton, Program Manager of the Waterbury Alternative in the Community and Transitional Housing Program, recently shared feedback from a new team member: “I got rave reviews of the orientation. Heard it was one of the best if not the best. Fun and informative. It made you feel like you want to be part of such a great organization. Plus, they loved that Beth [Hines, our Executive Director] comes and talks to them, showing that they matter. Just wanted to shout you all out! Thank you for the work you do with this onboarding process—it sets the tone.”

With Beth’s personal involvement and Marie and Sonja’s dedication, these orientations emphasize that our commitment to change and justice is more than a mission statement, it’s part of our everyday practice. Through meaningful discussion, they bring to life our shared values and create a foundation of trust and respect, inviting each new staff member to become fully engaged in our work and our vision for a fairer future.

Thank you, Marie and Sonja, for making each orientation a powerful and genuine welcome to our CPA family.
