Nearly 1,000 Moments of Dignity

When the Clothes Closet at Hartford Community Court (HCC) began running low this winter, a community responded.

Through the leadership of Connecticut State’s Attorney Investigator Jose Martinez and HCC Program Manager Deb Barrows and in collaboration with the Town of Ellington, Ellington Police Department, Resident State Troopers, Hartford State’s Attorney’s Office, businesses, and churches, nearly 1,000 clothing and hygiene items were collected and delivered.

As Deputy Director Deb Rogala noted during the recognition ceremony held in late February, these donations represent nearly “1,000 moments of dignity.”

For individuals experiencing homelessness or returning home from incarceration, clean clothing can determine whether someone feels confident attending a job interview or court appointment. During winter months, coats and thermal wear provide basic protection.

Local news coverage captured the spirit of the effort and the leadership behind it. Read the full story here: Ellington-officer-rallies-community-to-donate-1000-items-to-Hartford-Community-Court-closet.pdf
